Chromate Conversion Coating Service By Yicen Machining

Chromate conversion coating is a chemical treatment that forms a passive, corrosion-resistant layer on aluminum and similar metals. It works by reacting the base metal with a chromium-based solution, creating a thin film that protects against oxidation and enhances adhesion for secondary coatings like paint or powder.

Sometimes referred to as chemical film or Alodine, this treatment is widely trusted in high-performance environments where both corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity are essential.

Process Steps – How It’s Applied

At Yicen Machining, the chromate coating process is carefully controlled to meet MIL-DTL-5541 Type I and Type II standards:

  • Degreasing & Cleaning
Surfaces are thoroughly cleaned to remove oil, dirt, and oxides.
  • Etching (optional)
Parts may be lightly etched to improve film bonding.
  • Chemical Application
Components are immersed or sprayed with the chromate solution.
  • Rinse & Dry
The part is rinsed with deionized water and air-dried, leaving a uniform protective film.

This coating is applied at micron-level thickness, ensuring full protection without affecting precision features.

Why Choose Chromate Conversion Coating?

Yicen Machining delivers high-quality chromate coatings that provide:

  • Long-Term Corrosion Resistance
Shields aluminum from oxidation in industrial and marine environments.
  • Preserved Electrical Conductivity
Ensures continuity for grounding, shielding, and electrical pathways.
  • Excellent Primer Compatibility
Ideal surface preparation for painting or powder coating.
  • Minimal Dimensional Change
Extremely thin layer keeps tight tolerances intact.
  • Field Repairable
Damaged areas can be spot-treated without stripping the entire part.
  • Aesthetic Versatility
Offers both matte-clear and iridescent yellow finishes.

Suitable Materials

Chromate conversion coating is most effective on:

  • Aluminum & Aluminum Alloys
    (6061, 5052, 7075, etc.)
  • Zinc and Zinc-Plated Parts
  • Magnesium Alloys
    (with appropriate pre-treatment)

If your project involves aluminum parts exposed to moisture, chemicals, or electrical systems, chromate coating is a smart, reliable solution.

Where It’s Used

Thanks to its protective and conductive properties, chromate conversion is widely used in:

  • Aerospace:
Interior/exterior airframe parts, brackets, and housings
  • Defense & Military:
Tactical electronics, armor components, and communication gear
  • Electronics Manufacturing:
RF enclosures, connectors, and shielding panels
  • Automotive & EV Systems:
Lightweight aluminum components and battery enclosures
  • Marine Applications:
Corrosion-prone parts used in coastal or saltwater environments

よくある質問

Chromate Conversion Coating

  • Is chromate conversion coating thick?

No. The coating is extremely thin—typically 0.00001″ to 0.00004″—and has negligible impact on part dimensions.

  • What’s the difference between clear and yellow coatings?

Yellow (hexavalent) offers stronger corrosion resistance. Clear (trivalent) is RoHS compliant and better for environmental regulations.

  • Does it affect conductivity?

No. In fact, it preserves aluminum’s natural conductivity, making it ideal for EMI and RFI shielding.

  • Can it serve as the final finish?

Yes. It can be used as a standalone finish in non-cosmetic or electrically sensitive applications.

  • Is chromate conversion coating RoHS compliant?

Only trivalent (Type II) coatings meet RoHS standards. We offer both Type I (hexavalent) and Type II options based on your specifications.
